As a member of the HCI Research Informatics team, this Database Administration, Jr. position requires a strong Database background. The Research Informatics team is responsible for managing development projects for various groups at HCI . Research Informatics team members work closely with laboratory scientists, clinical researchers and population scientists on requirements, design, project management, testing and implementation to provide systems solutions and coordinate overall delivery of software applications.
The selected candidate will provide Oracle 10g and Microsoft SQL Server database server life cycle support including database design, development, implementation and support in the development and production environments. The candidate will also assist in providing recommendations and solutions on database and application architecture, database integrity, security and availability to the HCI community. The successful candidate will preferably come from a software development background including development experience in Java and Hibernate. Clinical trials experience and familiarity with the Oncore CTMS is desirable. Candidate preferably also possesses web services and interface development experience utilizing various technology frameworks.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain Oracle and SQL Server databases on Windows and Unix servers including monitoring, schema management, space management, performance tuning, SQL tuning, database backup and recovery, disaster recovery, data replication, and database refresh.
- Strong emphasis on industry standard software development methodologies and practices.
- Perform full life cycle support including data modeling, design and implementation of physical and conceptual models for our databases.
- Develop reports, queries, and data migration programs (to port data from existing systems into newly developed application databases).
- Software, interface and web services development in, Java/J2EE, JSP , EJB , servlets, Hibernate, Flex, Orion, SQL Server, Oracle.
- Support of critical clinical research, Basic Science and Administration applications vital to the HCI environment supporting Oracle 10g and beyond.
- Provide 24×7 production support and ensure all critical database problems are resolved in a very timely manner.
- Must think strategically and work in partnership with Senior DBAs, the entire Research Informatics team, and the CATG team.
- Work closely with team members acting as hands-on technical backup for support, as well as emergency and on-call back-up.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, business information systems, medical informatics.
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area.

Preferences
- Preferably 1-2 years experience administering Oracle databases.
- Strong communications skills.
- Preferably worked with and understands open source databases.
- Preferably possesses working knowledge and experience in Java, Hibernate, UML and J2EE concepts.
- Excellent SQL skills.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills in Oracle, SQL Server and Windows environments.
- Experience in a distributed environment (i.e. Unix, Windows, Linux).
- Experience in implementing Clustering technologies to ensure redundancy and continued operation of production systems.
- Experience in various database tools and software like Oracle OEM , SQLServer Enterprise Manager, Java, XML , Power Designer, ERWIN .
- Understanding of entire software development life cycle and willing to work within it.
- Self starter and motivated individual.
